A new mini-collaboration

Known for their quintessential British country clothing, Cordings of Piccadilly has been an iconic brand based in London since 1839, with their classic pieces being popular with Royalty and the great British public alike.

Rock and Roll

In 2003, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member and long-standing Cordings fan, Eric Clapton CBE, became joint MD and helped re-establish the brand, including the introduction of a women’s range.  Over the years, Cordings has stayed true to its roots and continues to use cloth from British mills, upholding the heritage and authenticity of their garments which make them stand the test of time. The understated style typical of the Cordings range is not only suitable for out in the field, but also for days in the city.

We recently teamed up with Cordings to create a stunning tweed and leather version of our Clipper bag to complement their range, and we think it fits in perfectly! We spoke to Cordings’ Marketing Director Hillary Becque and asked her why they chose to work with us on this special project…

What are the key values at Cordings?

In the last 177 years, Cordings have become an authority on British country style. We pride ourselves on creating authentic, value for money clothes and accessories that are fit for purpose, beautifully made and well designed.

How important is it to Cordings that British materials are used in your products/clothing?

British materials are in our DNA, from the tweeds in our jacket collections, the cords and moleskins in our trousers and the Scottish lambswool in our knitwear. It comes back to the point of authenticity; the British mills and makers we work with have often been in business nearly as long as Cordings, and intrinsically understand what it is to create British style.

How do you go about choosing the fabrics and materials you use for making your products/clothing?

The end use of the garment or accessory is the starting point. For example, the shooting tweeds are inherently a slightly heavier weight and a more robust cloth than the lighter weight tweeds we use in our summer collections. Natural fibres are inherently used, and colour is an important part of the Cordings collections, so we will always offer classic blues and greens alongside stronger tomes, which sit so well with the tweeds.

How important is it to combine the Cordings heritage with current fashion?

We don’t try to follow ‘fashion’, rather we adhere to the importance of ‘style’. We are always happy when someone comes into the store in Piccadilly wearing their grandfather’s covert coat. I think if you get it right, you create garments that don’t date.

What made you choose Tusting to collaborate with for making this bag?

It was a really simple decision! Tusting is a master in leather goods manufacturing. The family’s background in tanning means that they intrinsically understand leather and how to work it. The quality of the leather and craftsmanship is second to none. They also understand the importance of understated style, Tusting leather goods also stand the test of time.

What is the one thing that you cannot be without in your bag?

Apart from the usual keys/wallet/phone I always carry a tape measure. It is surprising how useful it is!

If you could pair one Tusting accessory with the Cordings bag, which would it be and why?

The leather goodie pouch in raspberry. It is a beautiful colour and can be used for so many things. Eminently practical and very pretty!
